Business class seats to be removed from planes
From: Bloomberg (more at: www.bloomberg.com) Posted May 12, 2009

Australian carrier Qantas may be set to remove some of its business class seats as the demand for
premium travel plummets, according to a report by Bloomberg.  The report quotes the carrier’s chief
executive Alan Joyce as saying that “Ideally, in the current environment, we wouldn’t have as many
premium seats as we have”. Qantas was one of the first carriers to introduce a business class product
at the start of the 1980s, but has recently seen demand for its premium seats fall by some 30 per cent.
Bloomberg says that up to 40 per cent of the space on the airline’s Boeing 747 aircraft is used for business and first class seating. Qantas
recently postponed the delivery of its next four A380 superjumbos by 10-12 months.

Swine Flu hits Qantas Passengers
From NeW Zealand Herald (more at: www.nzherald.co.nz) and WA Today (more at: www.watoday.com.au) Posted May, 5, 2009

Two transit passengers were this morning taken into quarantine at Auckland International Airport after
being screened upon arrival from Los Angeles, on Qantas flight QF26, enroute to Sydney and
Melbourne. The two women were taken to Middlemore Hospital where they will be placed in quarantine
for 24 hours. Also, WA Today reports that Qantas is failing to provide adequate protection and
information to frontline staff on the hazards of swine flu, the Transport Workers Union says. While there
have been no confirmed cases of the virus in Australia yet, in Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has
activated the state's pandemic plan after 16 people presented with suspected cases of the disease.
There are 10 suspected cases under investigation in NSW.

for smoking. When he protested he further restrained by the crew of QF32 and was handed over to Police at Changi
Airport in Singapore.  As the strain on the airline employees increases with layoffs, falling wages and strikes, Qantas
crew has been accused of taking out their frustration on passengers for minor offenses.

Qantas flight turns back after mid-air engine trouble
From: The Age (more at www.theage.com.au and www.flyertalk.com) Posted Feb. 16, 2009

Australia's troubled national carrier Qantas has suffered another blow with a flight leaving Melbourne forced
to turn back after experiencing problems with engine #3. Flight QF25 from Melbourne to Los Angeles left
Tullamarine and was climbing when passengers heard a loud bang. "We were still going up when we heard
this really loud bang and the plane started to level out," passenger Cormac Lally said. "Not long after, the
pilot came on the speaker and said we're going to turn back". The Aircraft, VH-OJB emergency landed in Melbourne at 13:45.  A
loudspeaker announcement after landing said the B747/400 was "un-serviceable".

Qantas A-380 Giant plane lose Oil pressure - 450 people stranded
From: Sydney Morning Herald (more at: www.smh.com.au) Posted: Jan 28, 2009

A Qantas A380 has been grounded at Los Angeles airport, halting travel plans for almost
450 passengers bound for Sydney due to low oil pressure in one of the engines. "We've boarded
passengers, [the captain has] started the engine and he's received an indication light in the cockpit
of low oil pressure in one of the engines," a Qantas spokeswoman said. All passengers were taken
on buses to two hotels. One passenger on the plane said it left the terminal, but had to be towed
back two hours later where they waited a further two hours. It is the second time one of Qantas' three A380 planes have been grounded.
Another flight QF12 from Los Angeles to Sydney was forced to land in Nadi, the plane then encountered an onboard computer problem.

Qantas kennel fails - A330 power systems damaged by dog
From: Fox News (more at: www.foxnews.com) Posted: Jan 24, 2009

A Qantas jet was grounded after a dog in the cargo hold escaped from its cage and snacked on parts of the
aircraft's interior. The animal chewed through electrical wiring and panels. The first indication of trouble
occurred when the Airbus A330 left Auckland bound for Melbourne. A warning light in the cockpit indicated
problems with the auxiliary power unit. An inspection revealed that after somehow getting out of its
transportation cage the animal chewed through the wiring loom to the unit, Qantas reported to the Australian
Transport Safety Bureau. An aviation engineering source said: "The dog ripped out several wires which set off the cockpit warning and then
it had a go at a number of electrical units in the rear of the plane."

Qantas airbus-A380 has emergency landing in Fiji - 343 passengers stranded
From: Radio New Zealand and (www.rnzi.com) and Dan News (www.dannews.co.nz) Posted Jan 6, 2009

A midair emergency involving a sick Qantas passenger forced the world’s largest passenger plane, the
Airbus A380, to touch down in Fiji for the first time yesterday. But what was supposed to be a quick
turnaround became an overnight stay after an onboard computer problem was unable to be fixed by
local engineers. Also, Qantas had to cancel the trip, because the flight crew would have breached their
allowable working hours.  Flight QF12, with 343 passengers on board, was 10 hours and 45 minutes
into its journey from Los Angeles to Sydney when it had to make the landing. A Boeing-747 had to be
sent to pick up the passengers.

Platinum Customer: Inflight "Service" is Unimpressive
From: E. Melvin (more at: www.airlinequality.com) Posted: Nov. 25, 2008

ADL to SIN on direct QF82 flight in business. Third trip up to SIN on Qantas this year in business and as usual, comfortable ride but
completely disinterested staff. Despite being a platinum FF travelling in business, no welcome on boarding, no offer to take my coat. Staff
brusque and non communicative during the meal service and no offer of drinks or snacks after the initial meal service. Qantas needs to
understand that being dour does not equate to being professional. Cabin manager did a lap of honour after take off and before landing but
not seen for the rest of the flight. Food good but not great - wine choice limited, reds okay but selection of whites awful. For the money, what
you're getting is the space and a pretty comfortable sleeper seat.

Qantas A380 will not have internet access as promised
From: Sydney Morning Herald (more at: www.smh.com.au) Posted Oct. 16, 2008

QANTAS has shelved plans to offer live internet access on its A380 planes from next month. Qantas will instead offer only a limited selection
of what it calls "cached internet content".  A Qantas spokeswoman said the internet plans had been pared back due to "logistical and
regulatory issues" encountered by its connectivity provider, OnAir. Qantas has refused to give further details of what content will be included
- other than qantas.com - or how much the service would cost.

Passenger: Never flying Qantas again – ever
Posted: The Green Room by zer0l0gic (atomicmpc.com.au) April 30, 2008

So I and my wife went to Queensland, through Sydney for holidays. And we've come back home now - just...
Now I don't know if I expected too much, but here is a taste of my experiences of Qantas.  Aircraft - Old.
Patched. Make odd sounds at intermittent times. Seats badly worn and totally uncomfortable.  Service - Old.
Oops. Better be politically correct. LOL. But why is it that Qantas flight attendants are nearly never <55Y/o? I asked nicely for a Coke, was
told that there was none to be had. ?!!?? Joke? No, it's true. And on the second flight I asked for a juice or water and it never arrived.  Flight
- The whole experience was like being on the Scooby Doo roller coaster at Movie World. So combine that with the age of the aircraft and it
makes for a real interesting journey. Then there was the part where we did a self check-in, chose our seats only to be told - while boarding -
that we were requested to sit next to the emergency exit. Story doesn't end there, my wife sat next to the emergency exit and complained that
there was an icy draft coming from the seals around the emergency door. How close to death were we?  Truly, I'm freaked. Flying Qantas
was not enjoyable and wasn't a great start or finish to our holiday. The only thing I can say that's positive is that we survived.

Passenger: Qantas cancelled my flight 5 times to maximize revenue
Posted by:  daveflkss (measuredup.com) Posted April 23, 2008

5 times my flight has been delayed. All times I have been told that the 10:30am service from Sydney to Melbourne has been combined with
later flights. I have had discussion with fellow fliers and they have told me of similar experiences. Would Qantas delay a flight with the view of
utilizing planes and maximizing profits? You would hope not, but my experience is starting to point the other way. I am sitting the flight lounge
right now waiting for a flight -having been told by the check in lady at their flight club that "you have just been unlucky" and in a tone that
sent condescending chills down my spine. I just stated that this was the 5th time in 2 weeks that this had happened at this particular time of
day to me. Weird? All I know is that this circumstance and the pathetic delivery of customer sabotage on behalf of the customer staff truly
indicates that the company has a culture that has absolutely no idea and the execution is pitiful. My advice, Qantas will give you a crappy
cookie when you fly interstate and a heap of nostalgic Australian emotions - but deep down they are just a poorly executing operation that
needs a good shove along if they hope to keep their continual business travelers.

Qantas – Flight Delays at 20% in February
From: The Australian (more at: theaustralian.news.com.au) Posted April 18, 2008

The numbers are out. For February Qantas on-time arrival and departure is down again. In February over 20% of the airline’s flight was
delayed and the Qantas subsidiary, Qantaslink, cancelled 2.4% of all flights that month.

Passenger: 747 Window Cracks at Qantas is nothing New
Submitted by Kevin (Posted April 10, 2008)

[Background: on April 2, a Qantas 747 from Perth to Sydney made an emergency landing
in Adelaide when a window broke] My wife and I boarded a flight from Cairns to Melbourne
three weeks ago and 5 to 10 minutes into the flight hit some extra scary turbulence.I literally
freaked out,as I had  not been on a plane of that size before and it had been 13 yrs since
the last trip. When the plane had evened out my wife went to the loo and I thought I would
check  something out that I had noticed after the episode before. I leaned over and could
hear a whisling sound like air rushing in, I checked the air ducts above as it was also cold
as even with a heavy denim jacket and jeans on. When I realized that the noise and the air was not coming from above I leaned down again
and pushed on the plastic panel below the window and the sound stopped when I took my hand off it returned.I wondered why I was feeling
extra sick and really tired .I also had a strange sort of panic attack and felt like I was hyperventilating. Thinking that if I told someone they
would have passed it of as I being green at flight I kept it to myself until the following Monday after we had flown home.I rang Qantas and told
a receptionist the story of which she said this was not normal and she would pass it on to her supervisor, I doubt it was but I had felt I had
done the right thing about the situation , I would hate to see people die especially when they trust Australian airline companies when it comes
down to the almighty buck and not spending too much to get it.I  just hope they fix all the aircraft so our impecible record of safety can be
retained and I can fly once again and feel safe, like any other normal human being.

Frequent flier: Qantas service has declined Drastically
Submitted by: MickinVic  April, 5, 2008

I have flown Qantas many times in flights to & from the US. Over the past 10 years,  they have gotten steadily worse - service is poor, staff
are surly, and the quality (and quantity) of food has drastically altered - for the worse. Qantas will NOT change unless it's forced to change -
and this means it will change only when it  sees pasengers flying with the opposition. I would urge anyone who is dissatisfied with Qantas'
service to do the obvious - stop flying with  them, and fly with the opposition instead. I really do hope that Virgin is able to open up the
Australia-to-US market, to provide more competition and better service!
